How to Live to be 100 - Ebook

When Barbara Meynert asked me to write a foreword to this new edition of How to live to be 100, I accepted with great enthusiasm.

This book is a wonderfully pragmatic introduction to those who are looking for a simple health and fitness program, full of common sense tips and tools. Just read the following lines and you will soon understand why this book is for you.

The foundations of How to live to be 100 are in striking alignment with the main pillars of The Star Body programs we run from our studio in London. These pillars have emerged from the latest trends in medical research which show that the mind and body have to be treated as a whole. The integrative “Star Body mind-body” approach has a proven track record of delivering fitness excellence with sustainable results.

The four pillars mentioned in this book demonstrate its timeless wisdom and are crucial to anyone who has a desire to excel in both wellness and fitness.

Here they are:

1) Mindset: It’s all in your mind. Regardless of whether you have decided to live your life taking proactive steps towards your goals or to live in reaction to the environment, you are always in control, consciously or unconsciously, of your actions and ultimately of your life. As such, you are responsible for your body and how you treat it. The first step is to create the thought processes to put you in control of your health and fitness.

2) Exercise: Your body is your vehicle for life. Make it stronger, make it agile, treat it well and learn how you can take it to an optimal state at any age. Do this for your body, and your body will take care of you for life!

3) Bodyfuel: Like any vehicle, if you do not put in the right fuel, your body will not perform at its best. The food you eat will nourish your blood, your cells and every organ in your body. It will also nourish your thoughts, the state you are in at any given time and therefore your behavior. Ultimately, the food you eat will nourish who and what you are.

4) Relaxation: Your whole body will work at its best when you are relaxed. You will achieve higher degrees of health and fitness when you take real time to relax. Your muscles grow stronger and you will see your fat fading away faster than ever before. Decide to take periods of time off during your day, even if only for five minutes, and use techniques that will put you in a relaxed state.

So, think of your body as a vehicle and your life as a journey. The quality of your journey is integrally related to the quality of your vehicle.

To illustrate this, have you ever sat in a class or meeting and felt you were not “100% there”, that your mind and body were not giving you full support? Or have you ever been with your friend or spouse and felt you were not giving your best?

There are things you can do to address these feelings. To start, decide what it is you want:

You may desire:
- better health
- a more toned body
- more energy
- more muscle mass
- more….fill in the gap!

We were all given this amazing body and, whether we like it or not, we live in it 24/7. And we all know the state of our bodies at any given time has a direct influence on the state of our minds – and vice-versa.

The 1960s was one of the most creative decades in history, and that is when this book was originally published. The author broke rank with the long-held belief of our forefathers that we should try to attain an age of three-score year and ten – or seventy. The writings of Dr. Clement Martin are valid more than ever today, and this book provides a great foundation that will assist you going the first steps towards the achievement of your health and fitness goals.

If you don’t know what to do or where to start, visit our website at www.thestarbody.com. There, we will show you the fastest way to achieve your goals using a sustainable and proven approach. This means you can keep your results and benefit from them...for life!

Whatever stage you are at, make the most out of the information included in this book and put its principles into practice. Decide to take control of your present and future... and be amazed at what will come to you.

To your health and fitness success!

MINDSET: Think and Grow Fit - Decide on your Fitness Goals, Outline the Strategy and Take Action

By Pedro Eloy

Before you take any form of action, create an engaging mental image of the desired outcome and believe it is achievable. Believe YOU can achieve it and entertain this thought until it becomes your new reality.

When starting a new Health & Fitness Programme, how many times have you said to yourself: - “I’ll give it a go and keep my eyes open for other opportunities in case I fail this time”? How many times have you started a project and have agreed to take action with total determination until you have achieved its Goals? Even if you can’t remember any outstanding project, just think of the last time you went to the supermarket with the intention to buy x, y and z products and, a few minutes later, you saw yourself closing the fridge, the freezer or the food cupboard with a sense of achievement...with a sense of “job done”?

Now switch off all your thoughts for a couple of seconds and allow yourself to dwell on the following question:
- why do you decide to accept doubt and uncertainty to prevail in your mind while engaging on some activities when, in other occasions, you reject this same doubt and uncertainty while progressing tasks you REALLY HAVE TO, NEED TO or MUST DO?

The distinction between those who succeed and those who fail is the difference between wishful thinking and burning desire. The latter is usually backed with plans that ensure the goal is achieved, regardless of external circumstances.

The average person tends to look at those who are already successful in any area and only see the end result. They are not aware that, in most cases, the beginning of their journey began days, months or even years before they have achieved their goal. See the examples of two well-known Hollywood actors: Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. They were not well known actors before they stared in the movie “Good Will Hunting”. Before this Hollywood Hit, they were just striving to get parts in ordinary movies. What they have decided to do since the beginning of their career was to put all their personal power, total commitment and energy into what they wanted to do. They have decided to become BIG Hollywood actors months or even years before they became well-known movie-moguls. They have burnt all bridges behind and put all their energy in achieving what they wanted. They both have succeeded greatly and now that they the formula for success, they just use it effortlessly, over and over again!

When things are not going the way we expect them to go and the future seems dismal, most people tend to sway towards the easy path – the path of failure, the path of excuses. Successful people have learnt that even when things are not going the way they want, there is always a powerful lesson to learn or even something big is about to manifest only to those that have the endurance to persist until they succeed.

Success can show up in a disguised way, but always rewards those that allow themselves to persist until they succeed. All racing cyclists know that every uphill (the difficult part of the journey), regardless of its size, is always followed by a downhill (the easy and pleasant part). Once you have decided to pursue a Fitness Goal, there will always be a turning point some time or place ahead – the moment when you have reached the “top of that mountain”. From then onwards, it’s downhill!

After re-reading a passage on the classic book “Think and Grow Rich” I came across Napoleon Hill’s so-called “steps to success”.I have incorporated and fined-tuned some of them in the Star Body Programmes and also added other steps to fasten the process and ensure goal achievement and goal sustainability:

1) Create a Burning desire so that you HAVE TO achieve your Fitness Goal

2) Believe it is possible and commit to entertain this goal every single day in your mind. Make it your best friend

3) Be specific with what you want to achieve (ex: lose 20 pounds, run 10k in 30 minutes, go down 2 dress sizes, etc.)

4) Plan the strategy, sub-strategies and intermediate goals. Determine exactly what you intend to DO and GIVE to achieve this reality: there is no such thing as something for nothing

5) Back the strategy and actions with persistence which do not recognize failure

6) Begin the strategy and the actions AT ONCE, regardless of whether you are ready or not to put this plan into action – START TODAY!

7) Establish a definite date when you want to have the Body and Health you desire

8) Have a clear and precise written statement of:
-------- The specific goal(s) you want to achieve
-------- The Timeframes
-------- What you intend to give away in order to achieve this goal (ex: Invest 30 minutes every day to do exercise; invest in a Personal Trainer or in our Multidisciplinary programmes we run at The Star Body)
-------- Clearly describe the plan you will commit to in order to achieve your goal

9) Read your written statement aloud twice a day: in the morning and before going to bed. As you read this statement, see, feel and believe you are already in possession of the goal(s) - this creates an intense desire to move towards the end result and will engage your RAS (Reticular Activating System) to focus on activities and actions you need to do to achieve the desired goal(s).

10) Treat any hurdle as part of the journey. Take lessons from it and, if needed, re-adjust the route.

11) Celebrate the achievement of every intermediate goals and the achievement of the final goal

12) Plan, as you go along, maintenance and improvement strategies to act upon once the main goal is achieved. Create new goals and start a new journey. Have fun again ... and again!

Some of these steps have been originally stamped by Thomas A. Edison and been used ever since by successful people. Those that have understood and applied these principles have realized that any goal, such as an H&F related goal cannot be left to chance, good fortune or luck. All big achievers are people that had the vision before their goal was manifested.

If you truly desire Health & Fitness, you have to be fully confident that you will soon acquire it. Only those that become H&F conscious will succeed as they consistently saturate their mind with a burning desire together with all the reasons why it is imperative for them to achieve such goal.

Put your dreams into action and soon you will harvest the results.

PERSONAL TRAINING - The Benefits of Core Training

By Rosa Whitehead

If you have done some form of exercise you may have a vague idea about what the term core training actually is and you will most certainly feel where those muscles are a few days after doing core training with me. If on the other hand, core training is something that has not been your priority, hopefully this article will help demonstrate the importance of such training and the benefits you will gain.

Strong core muscles should be at the very “core” of one's fitness goals. Together with achieving your optimum fitness goals you will also reduce your risk of injury.
Whether your goal is weight loss or hypertrophy, you are only as strong as your core muscles will allow you to be. Press ups, Squats, Lunges deadlifts … the list goes on. All require your core muscles to be engaged for maximum strength and to support your back, preventing injuries from occurring - as an example, when you are doing squats, it’s the core muscles that are your own belt!

Your Core muscles should be engaged 24/7, not just when exercising. Building your awareness of this is a very good place to start. Think about your posture when you are standing up or even when you are walking- are you engaging your Core?
Abdominal bracing is a simple and effective way to stabilise the core. Sart with pulling the naval into the spine and tensing your abs during your day.

Leading on to posture, when training clients I talk about what is known as neutral spine. This is midway between full flexion(forwards) and full extension (backwards) of the lower back, as determined by the position of the pelvis. This is maintained through muscular activity, hence placing minimal stress on the ligaments and discs of the spine.
Many of our clients seem to have an anterior tilt of the pelvis increasing the extended curve of the lower back (arched lower back). Muscle imbalances can be exacerbated as a consequence of this, leading to elongated and weakened rectus abdominis (see anatomy description below or picture above) and shortened lower back muscles(quadratus lumborum). These imbalances are usually responsible for lower back pain and tightness in areas where other muscle groups have to compensate.

These muscle imbalances can easily be addressed and corrected with appropriate strengthening and stretching exercises. when you see people in the Gym trying to balance on swiss balls and doing various exercises on the big round balls, they are doing a lot more than performing a balancing act!!! Doing these types of exercises, stabilising muscles will come into play. By recruiting more muscle fibres and getting more muscle groups working functionally and efficiently, you are also gaining in strength and burning more calories throughout a training session, as more effort is required.

The training I give to my clients at The Star Body incorporates many different types of core work exercises. Tighten the inner muscles that extend round to your spine (your “natural belt”) and inches will potentially start to vanish! Hving plenty of Core Muscle exercises in your training routine will also ensure that you are working towards increasing your overall strength.

Start TODAY incorporating your core training into your workout routine and see the changes in the next couple of days.

For further information on Core Exercises and for information on The Star Body training sessions please contact me at rosa@thestarbody.com

For Reference:

What muscles does the Core comprise of?
Often the muscles of the core are considered only to include the abdominal and lower back muscles. This view is too narrow, since the powerful hip and upper back muscles should also be considered as part of this group.

Deep Muscle Layer:
These consist of the Rotatores, intertransversarii and interspinalis. These muscles cross from one segment of your spine to another and are important for position sense function. In other words they are important to prevent injury to the spine by helping to prevent any uncontrolled movements.

Middle Muscle Layer (Inner Unit):
These include the tranversus abdominis (TVA), Internal Obliques, Lumbar Multifidus, Diaphragm and Pelvic Floor. Intra abdominal pressure is created by contraction of these muscles. This shows why it is so important to breath correctly when doing exercises. When these muscles contract they stabilise your spine and form a working foundation from which the arms and legs can function optimally.

Outer Muscle Layer (Outer Unit):
These include the Rectus Adominis, External Obliques, Erector Spinae, Latissimus Dorsi the Gluteals and the Adductors and form muscle slings . These muscle slings help our body’s ability to function well and provides optimal working relationship between our joints.

MINDSET - Creating your BIG VISION as the Starting Point. What do you really want regarding your Health and Fitness?

By Pedro Eloy

Think about how you would like to see yourself and keep that image in your mind. While you’re at it, imagine what you would be doing if this was the new “You”.
How differently would you feel and relate to your colleagues, friends and family? Would you embrace life’s challenges with a different attitude? Would you be able to savour life’s different flavours and live every day to the most, instead of just going through life motions in a survival mode?

As I was about to write this article, I came across Sun Tzu’s book “The Art of War”. In the first pages he wrote: “Before doing battle, in the temple one calculates and will win, because many calculations were made; before doing battle, in the temple one calculates and will not win, because few calculations were made”This is one of the first principles I go through with my clients at The Star Body when I start working with them. If one does not know where one wants to go, one will probably never reach the desired destination.

Imagine yourself at the airport, all set to go on vacation. You approach the counter and ask for a ticket that will take you airborne....but where to? If you do not know the destination you want to go you will probably be sold a destination chosen by the travel agent.

When was the last time you thought about your H&F final destination? When was the last time you have entertained your mind with the vision, the sounds, the flavours, the conversations, the achievements and the feelings you would have if you were already living your H&F vision?

People express their desire of having a different bodies and their need to skyrocket their health. They tell us they have tried a variety of different approaches, from painful diets promising express results, to intensive training routines claiming exceptional results, only to end up in frustration and with their energy levels completely drained.

Start by creating a clear Vision of what you want to achieve and consequently see with your own eyes the different possible ways you can get there. When you are contemplating this new Vision, put in sounds, flavours, odours, colours, emotions and feelings so that you are fully sold on the idea of achieving that vision, regardless of the obstacles or difficulties you may find. Focus your

Reticular Activating System (RAS) into your Vision, simply by entertaining this sensory image in your mind every single day and you will be surprised with the number of ideas you will come across that will enable you to get to your H&F destination.
At The Star Body we say that ‘if you don’t take care of your health and fitness, your health and fitness will take care of you’.

Think of a time when you remember having a fantastic Health and being in a great Fitness condition. What images are you seeing? What sounds are you hearing? What emotions are you feeling? What was the impact your mental and physical condition had in your life and In the lives of your significant others? Now think of a time when your Health & Fitness was at its worst and go through the same exercise....see what I mean?

The Human Mind is like a child, whatever you give her to play with, she will take it blindly. Each thought you entertain, creates an imprint in your memory bank. This imprint will have an emotional charge, consisting of colours, smells, flavours, sounds and feelings that you have associated to it. The more you entertain any thought, the bigger the imprint in your memory bank and the greater the impact it will have in your life. The thoughts you give to your mind to entertain will contribute to your reality...these thoughts will also become the actual projections of what you call reality.

The challenge I give you today is to allocate a couple of minutes to yourself this week to construct your ultimate vision of Health & Fitness - one that fits your dreams, one that reaches higher and deeper than ever before; one that makes your heart beat faster and your skin shiver with anticipation.Add plenty of colour, turn up the volume, take the emotions you will experience to the limit and picture the impact this new “You” will have in your personal life and on the lives of people that surround you. Once you have this mental image, freeze frame it and immediately commit to entertain this thought every day in your mind – wake up with it, go to work with it, sleep with it, breathe it...Do this for a month and share these experiences with us at myision@thestarbody.com. Get ready to be amazed with the outcome of this exercise!

MINDSET - Set up your Health & Fitness Goals Today! Take action and achieve your DREAM BODY ...and we will tell you how you can keep it FOR LIFE!

By Pedro Eloy

Did you know you could eat chocolate, ice cream, pizza, fruit juices, lasagne and at the same time put your health and fitness back on track? Were you aware that just by using other ingredients and preparing your food in a different way, you would be supplying your body with all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals you need for optimum performance? If this sounds too good, what if I told you that all these recipes take a fraction of the time to prepare (comparing to the food you eat on a daily basis) and that you can find (almost) all the ingredients in your local supermarket?

And what if I also mentioned that these recipes will not only supply your body with highly nutritional ingredients but also skyrocket your health, so that you will loose or gain weight depending on your needs and objectives? Regardless of your interest in the subject it has been proved countless times that if you don’t take care of your Health and Fitness, your Health and

Fitness will soon take care of you. Then, you will blame yourself for not having reacted sooner. The journey towards your ideal Health & Fitness goals can begin at any given day and all you need to do to start the process, is to take a decision! Once you have your mindset focused on what you want to achieve and a clear vision of your ideal body, freeze frame this “new you” and start taking action. If you don’t know what to do and/or how to do it, there are people that can put you on the right track.

At The Star Body we know that there are no ‘secret’ methods to achieve your Health and Fitness goals. Forget awkward diets and radical regimes. They have time-clocks attached to them and dangerously deprive your body from essential nutrition, vitamins and minerals. Most people that engage in such practices end up recovering the weight they have lost - and some more. And why is that? The answer is very simple: once you have achieved your desired results, all the motivation that made you do whatever you have done to get there, will have disappeared.

This means you will probably go back to your old habits and therefore get all the extra pounds you have lost – and a couple of extra ones too... Upon starting a weight loss programme, people focus on what they want to avoid, instead of thinking about the pleasure they will derive once they meet their goals. This negative framing will feed the desire to achieve the proposed goals in the shortest period possible, which will, in turn, lead to an increased awareness of what is – painfully - not allowed. As a result, they not only get locked in an unending cycle of pleasure and pain, but also keep engaging on short period anti-health-&-fitness journeys, which pay a severe toll on both their bodies and minds.

Millions of people have probably been in where you are right now. Millions have also managed to succeed in getting results in a sustainable manner. Whatever they have done to achieve their goals, they are still doing it in a consistent daily basis. A great body does not happen overnight. It takes time and dedication. Just working out or changing your nutritional habits is simply not enough to take you to your desired destination.

You have to derive pleasure from the process....and I mean LOTS OF PLEASURE! You can also input loads of pain to get away from what you do not want – this will probably be a less pleasant journey, but still a valid one. Does this make sense to you?

Our belief at The Star Body is that you can achieve your desired healthy body, and enjoy the process. In fact, our success strategies take into consideration your present lifestyle and guarantees that you will enjoy this journey so much that you will find yourself incorporating new health and fitness standards in your daily habits that will give you life-long success.

Some people say they do not have time to invest in their health and fitness. Time is what you do with it. Any day is a great day to charge towards your vision of health and fitness. At The Star Body we have clients that work 14 hours a day and still have decided to invest some time in their Health & Fitness. They are achieving spectacular results.Successful athletes know that in order to succeed, they have to see and accept this victory in their minds before they step onto the pitch or into the arena.

Have you ever thought why the main names in world sports are always the same? U.S. common folk say they perform miracles and magic....for them, it’s just a normal day!

Make a serious commitment and decide to start! Decide TODAY and go for it!

To your Health and Fitness Success,
